Tips on Storm Proofing Your House

If you live in an area where extreme weather is common, here’s some tips for you.

1) Clear the yard

When a storm comes through, make sure that your yard is decluttered. Don’t leave light furniture like folding chairs and tables, toys, or any other light objects that could be blown by the wind. Debris and light objects in your yard could easily become projectiles that could cause damage to your property or even could cause physical injuries.

Do some maintenance

When anticipating a storm, make sure to prune trees surrounding your property. You’d also want to check your gutters for leaves and other debris that could block water flow. It would also be a good idea to make sure that your chimney is functional in case of a power outage. A portable generator could also come in handy.

Secure your windows

If you have enough budget for it, install storm shutters if you haven’t had them installed. You might also want to consider having impact resistant windows installed as well. Otherwise, having insulation films on your windows would help prevent glass panes from completely shattering.

Invest in impact rated garage doors

The garage door, being the largest entry point in your house, could be a weak point especially during strong storms or hurricanes. Having impact-rated garage doors installed could prevent the possibility of damages from intense storms.

Other things to consider

It would also be a good idea to have backup batteries. Severe weather conditions could cut power lines and could possibly leave you in the dark for days. An emergency source of electricity would be something you’d like to have to keep necessary appliances running while you’re waiting for the storm to pass.

If you live in an area that storms and hurricanes frequent, being proactive in ensuring that you’re storm ready goes a long way toward keeping the safety of your house and your loved ones.
